Summer is foot season. Sandals come out, the pedicure schedule gets real, and suddenly every cracked heel and dry patch is front and center. The good news is that summer-ready feet aren't about a big once-a-month treatment — they're about a few small habits that compound across the season.
The Sun Does More Than You Think
Your feet get sun exposure every time you wear sandals, and the tops of feet are easy to forget. Sun damage here shows up as darkening, crepe-y skin, and — on the foot already bearing your weight — premature aging. Rule one of summer: sunscreen on the tops of your feet, reapplied after swimming. Rule two: the same broad-spectrum SPF you use on your face is fine here.
Sandal Season Is Callus Season
Straps and open backs mean more friction, and more friction means thicker skin. Address it weekly, not monthly: after a warm shower, file damp heels and the ball of the foot with a pumice stone or gentle foot file. Two minutes, once a week, keeps calluses from ever getting a head start. If a callus is already painful or cracked, that's a professional's job — a podiatrist can trim it safely and tell you if your footwear is contributing.
Hydration Flips the Script
Heat, air conditioning, and chlorine all dry skin out — feet included. Moisturize daily, ideally at night so it has hours to sink in. A rich cream or balm works better in summer than winter because skin is naturally more receptive. And drink the water, too: skin that's hydrated from the inside is softer on the outside.
The Pool & Beach Protocol
- Rinse feet in fresh water after salt or chlorine — never let them air-dry crusty.
- Shake out sand from sandals before putting them back on; sand underfoot is a fast way to rub a blister.
- Flip-flops and cheap sandals with no arch support invite heel pain by September. Alternate with a supportive pair on walking-heavy days.
- Go barefoot on clean grass and dry sand for ten minutes a day — it strengthens the small muscles shoes weaken.
Nail Care That Survives the Pool
Keep nails trimmed straight across and filed smooth — rough edges snag in pool tile and sand. Reapply polish after a swim if it chips; trapped moisture under a cracked coat is how discoloration starts. And between pedicures, a drop of cuticle oil at night keeps the nail bed looking fresh without a salon visit.
Own the Season
None of this is expensive or time-consuming. Sunscreen, a file, a good balm, and five minutes a day. By mid-August you'll have the kind of feet that make sandals look deliberate — and you'll feel the difference in comfort, not just looks. The feet that carry you deserve the season they were made for.
